Here’s a test. Open ChatGPT right now and ask it “what is [your brand name]?” If the answer is wrong, vague, or worse, “I don’t have information about that,” you have an entity SEO problem. And you’re losing business to competitors who fixed it.

Entity SEO is how AI engines and Google’s Knowledge Graph actually understand what your brand is, what you do, and whether you’re worth recommending. It’s not about keywords or backlinks. It’s about being a known thing in a structured knowledge system. And right now, the vast majority of brands are invisible entities, which means they’re invisible in AI search.

Most content on this topic is abstract and theoretical. This isn’t. Below is the exact playbook, including schema patterns, verification steps, and what actually moves the needle.

The Problem: AI Engines Need to “Know” Entities

Large language models don’t browse your website the way Google used to. They pull from a structured knowledge base built during training plus real-time retrieval from trusted sources. For your brand to show up in their answers, it has to exist as a known entity in that knowledge base.

Entities are the nouns of the web: people, places, companies, products, concepts. Google has been building its Knowledge Graph since 2012 and it now contains billions of entities with defined relationships. LLMs like GPT and Claude were trained on massive datasets that include Wikipedia, Wikidata, Crunchbase, news sites, and structured sources where entities are explicitly identified.

If your brand isn’t in those sources, AI engines genuinely don’t know you exist. No amount of blog content fixes that. You have to be recognized as an entity first, and then your content starts to matter.

A recent analysis of brand visibility across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini found that 89% of brands cited in AI answers had either a Wikipedia page, a Wikidata entry, or a strong Crunchbase profile with external references. The 11% that didn’t had heavy structured data on their own sites and consistent third-party mentions. Either way, entity signals were load-bearing.

Why Your Brand Is Invisible in the Knowledge Graph

There are three common reasons brands don’t exist as entities, and each has a specific fix.

First, no structured data. If your homepage doesn’t have Organization schema with clear identifiers, search engines have to guess what you are. They often guess wrong or skip the entity entirely.

Second, no external references. The Knowledge Graph doesn’t trust a brand just because the brand says nice things about itself. It needs corroborating mentions from third-party sources. If you don’t show up in Wikipedia, Wikidata, Crunchbase, LinkedIn, industry directories, or credible news, you’re not verifiable.

Third, inconsistent naming. If your brand is called “Acme” on your site, “Acme Inc” on LinkedIn, “Acme Corporation” on Crunchbase, and “acme.ai” in your URL, the knowledge graph sees three or four different entities and can’t merge them. Consistency is a prerequisite, not a nice-to-have.

Entity Recognition Signals That Actually Matter

Before the tactics, understand what AI engines and Google’s Knowledge Graph actually look at. These are the signals that move entity recognition, ranked by impact:

Organization schema with complete sameAs links pointing to your verified external profiles. This is the single most direct signal you can control.

Wikipedia presence, if you qualify. This is the gold standard. Every major LLM trained on Wikipedia, so a Wikipedia entry almost guarantees entity recognition.

Wikidata entry. Easier than Wikipedia, and Wikidata is explicitly designed as a structured knowledge graph. LLMs pull from it heavily.

Crunchbase profile with external references, funding history, and employee count. Crunchbase is one of the most trusted business entity sources.

LinkedIn company page with consistent branding, description, and URL.

Consistent NAP (name, address, phone) across major directories. Still matters for local and general entity disambiguation.

Clear About page and founder bio content on your own site that defines what you are in plain language.

Third-party content mentioning your brand by name in authoritative contexts: news, podcasts, industry reports, reviews.

With that hierarchy in mind, here are the tactics.

7 Tactics for Entity Optimization

This is the bare minimum and most brands still get it wrong. Add Organization schema to your homepage with every verified external profile listed under sameAs. Here’s the pattern that works:

Include name, legal name, URL, logo, founding date, founder (as Person entity), address, contact point, and most importantly sameAs pointing to your LinkedIn, Crunchbase, Wikipedia, Wikidata, GitHub, Twitter or X, and any other canonical profiles you own.

The sameAs property is how you tell search engines “these different URLs all refer to the same entity.” It’s the glue that lets the Knowledge Graph merge your identity across the web. Skipping it is like refusing to show ID.

2. Create or Claim a Wikipedia Entry

Wikipedia is the hardest but highest-leverage entity signal. The requirement is “notability,” which Wikipedia defines as significant coverage in reliable independent sources. Translation: you need to have been written about by mainstream publications, not just industry blogs.

If you qualify, a Wikipedia page essentially guarantees entity recognition by every major AI engine, because Wikipedia is the backbone of LLM training data. If you don’t qualify yet, earning notability should be a PR goal. Get mentioned in TechCrunch, the Wall Street Journal, the Verge, or sector-specific trade publications. Three or four independent, substantial mentions is often enough.

Warning: don’t pay someone to create your Wikipedia page. Paid editors get deleted and banned. Earn it or wait.

3. Wikidata Entry (Do This Today)

Wikidata is Wikipedia’s structured data cousin and it has much looser notability requirements. Anyone can create an entry, and LLMs pull from Wikidata constantly. This is the fastest entity win available to most brands.

Go to wikidata.org, create an account, and add an entry for your company. Include the basics: label, description, instance of (business), inception date, founded by, headquarters location, industry, official website, and references. Link everything to your sources. Add external IDs for LinkedIn, Crunchbase, Twitter, and your site.

A complete Wikidata entry can land in 30 minutes and it measurably improves how ChatGPT and Perplexity understand your brand. Don’t skip this one.

4. Crunchbase, LinkedIn, and Industry Directories

Claim your Crunchbase profile and fill it out completely. Funding rounds, leadership team, description, categories, competitors, external links, news. Crunchbase feeds directly into Google’s Knowledge Graph and into training data for major LLMs.

LinkedIn company page next. Ensure the URL matches your brand name, the description matches your homepage, and the employees are tagged to your company. LinkedIn is the most-cited source for company information in AI answers after Wikipedia.

Industry-specific directories matter too. G2 and Capterra for software. Clutch for agencies. AngelList for startups. These are entity sources AI engines actively scrape.

5. Consistent NAP Across Citations

Name, address, phone. It sounds basic but it’s where most entity disambiguation fails. If your brand name is written differently across sources, the Knowledge Graph can’t merge them into one entity.

Pick one canonical form and enforce it everywhere. Including capitalization. Including the “Inc” or “LLC” suffix (decide once, stick with it). Including the domain format. Every directory, every social profile, every press release.

6. About Page with Clear Entity Definition

Your About page is the single best place to define yourself for AI crawlers. Most About pages are vague brand copy. Replace it with a structured, entity-rich page that states unambiguously:

What the company is in one sentence. When it was founded. Who founded it with their backgrounds. What category it operates in. What products or services it offers. Who its customers are. Where it’s based. How it’s funded.

This reads like a Wikipedia stub, which is exactly the point. LLMs encountering this content can extract entity attributes cleanly. Vague marketing copy is useless for this.

7. Entity-Focused Content: Founder Bio and Company Story

Create dedicated content pages for the entities around your brand. A founder page with structured Person schema. A company story page. A product page with Product schema. Each of these reinforces the entity graph.

The founder bio matters more than people think. Founders are often recognized as entities before their companies are, especially if they’ve been in the industry. Link your brand and founder together via Organization.founder schema and Person.worksFor. This creates a verifiable entity relationship that AI engines can extract.

How to Verify AI Engines Know Your Brand

Run these four checks. They take 10 minutes.

Check one: Ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini “what is [your brand]?” Compare the answers. If any of them say they don’t know or get facts wrong, your entity signals are weak.

Check two: Google “[your brand name]” and look for a Knowledge Panel on the right side of the results page. No panel means Google’s Knowledge Graph doesn’t recognize you as an entity.

Check three: Search Wikidata for your brand. If there’s no entry, create one today.
